Frequently Asked Questions
How long to design my website?
Once we have an idea of what you're looking for as a client, we'll prepare some draft proposals for your review. Providing we have all the content you'd like to see on the site (including pictures) and your approval of one of our drafts, your website can be ready to publish within 3 weeks.
How do I provide my ideas for the site?
Often, we find clients admire aspects of other sites they've seen on the web and this is actually a very useful tool when it comes to designing their site. A picture is worth a 1000 words, so seeing something that's already caught your eye is invaluable in determining what look you're aiming for. Clients often already have business stationery with their company logo etc, so this also helps us incorporate their brand into the design of the website. If you can provide us with any pictures or samples and give us an idea of what colours you'd like to see used on your website, this is also of great help to our designers. When you enquire about a website, we'll conduct a telephone interview with you to discuss your requirements. When you've decided to take things further, we'll ask you to email us with any examples you might have of how you'd like the site to look.
Can I make changes to my site at a later date?
The basic package is designed to be fairly static, but if there are urgent changes you'd like to be made, we can make them on your behalf. If you want greater control over the content on your website, then the best choice would be from the packages offering a Content Management System (CMS) based website. CMS based websites offer the choice between content managed by us and content managed in-house. You can choose to have us update your content or you can opt to make the changes yourself. The Content Management System provides the software, built in to the site, to upload pictures, create posts and pages and publish your content to the web.
Do I need a domain name?
A domain name is the key to extending your brand to the web. They're not expensive and it's great to be able to have your email address as email@example.com rather than firstname.lastname@example.org. If you're just starting up, it's important to consider what domain name options are available to you when naming your business. We can help you secure a domain name for your website and manage the hosting and configuration of your domain and email system to help boost your pagerank (Pagerank is a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) term, which determines how relevant internet search engines consider your site to be and is the key to your customers finding your site first).
What is hosting and why do I need it?
The pages, pictures and content that make up your site, are files that are published to your website. These files need a storage area so people around the world can access them. Basic hosting simply provides space for the few files that make up the website. CMS sites also need a database in which to store the content published to your site. Our hosting packages provide storage and bandwidth allowances to make sure your site has enough resources and your site is hosted in a custom-built datacentre offering 99.999% network uptime and round-the-clock monitoring and maintenance.
What if I already have hosting?
Providing your hosting service provides all the software and technologies required to build your website, we can go ahead and build your site on that hosting.
Can Cool Pixel take care of the whole thing?
We certainly can! We feel our hosting is competitively priced and experience has shown that it's often easier for our clients if all their web-based services are consolidated. If you don't already own a domain name and website, it's definitely the best option. We can obtain your domain name for you, configure your domain for email and website hosting and provide ongoing maintenance, including domain renewal. We can also maintain your website for you and take regular backups. Check out the Hosting & Services page for details of our great hosting and management rates.
What about Cloud services, including email?
We recommend you take managed mailboxes based on the Gmail platform as part of your domain package. This involves integrating with Google Apps and provides you with an enterprise class email system based on Google's Gmail email system. Google Apps for Business accounts provide Microsoft Outlook integration for email, contacts and calendars, push email to mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads and Android smartphones (amongst others) and the ability to collaborate on documents in the cloud using Google Docs. Google Docs is a suite of tools similar to Microsoft Office, allowing you to make changes to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents online. Google have also recently added Google Drive, providing online storage space for backing up your important documents. These tools allow everyone in your team to work on your projects from anywhere that has internet access and a web browser. Other options are available, including Microsoft Server, Active Directory and Microsoft cloud-based solutions from our IT solutions partner. Please contact us for more information about this if you have advanced networking and support requirements.
